He retired from Santos in 1974 but a year later surprised fans by joining the New York Cosmos.
Facebook user Christopher Looi shared a rare picture of him with the icon after he received the FIFA Ballon d'Or Prix d'Honneur award.
“Setting new standards in the world of football,” he added.
“Time to say goodbye with a heavy heart. May your soul rest in peace, sir,” he tweeted.
@ChanSemenyih retweeted The Star's news of Pelé's passing, saying that the contribution of the “greatest player ever of the century” to the world of sports will not be forgotten.

Pelé, who rose from barefooted poverty to become one of the greatest and best-known athletes in modern history, died at the age of 82.
Tributes have been pouring in from across the world, including from world leaders and other sports legends.

He went on to give details about Pelé accomplishments, his goal record, and even his family background.
Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein hospital, where he was undergoing treatment, said he died at 3.27pm “due to multiple organ failures resulting from the progression of colon cancer associated with his previous medical condition”.
Mohamad Nidzam Kamaruddin also shared a picture of Pelé from 2015.
Many shared the news of his passing on social media platforms while remembering just how the football star played beautifully – also in reference to Pele's description of football as “The Beautiful Game”.
Pelé, whose given name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, joined Santos in 1956 and turned the small coastal club into one of the most famous names in football.
“He was also the youngest player in FIFA World Cup history to play in the finals.”
Football fan Akil Yunus took to Facebook to honour the legend with his post which read: “Rest in peace, legend. You were football personified and the beautiful game is all the better for it.”
Twitter user @Marchforward shared a thread on his handle about Pelé, saying “Brazilian football legend Pelé has died. Pelé led Brazil to the FIFA World Cup 世界杯竞猜下注app three times, namely 1958 in Sweden, 1962 in Chile and 1970 in Mexico.
